אחת הבעיות העיקריות העומדות בפני אלה שמאמינים בהיווצרות אקראית של החיים היא, שהסיכויים ליצירת המולקולה האורגנית הפשוטה ביותר הם אפסיים ובהתאם לחוקי המתמטיקה - בלתי אפשריים.

ווספורסין

ההורמון ווספורסין הוא מהפשוטים שבחלבונים. הוא נוצר בבלוטת יותרת המוח, ומתפקידו למנוע איבוד יתר של נוזלים על ידי ויסות פעולת הכליות. הווספורסין גם מעלה את לחץ הדם.
מבחינה כימית מורכב הווספורסין משמונה חומצות אמיניות המסודרות באופן מסוים, ומבנה זה חשוב ביותר לתפקוד ההורמון. אם יוחלף הסדר של שתי חומצות אמיניות, לא יוכל ההורמון לתפקד.
אילו הכנסנו את שמונה החומצות לכובע ושלפנו אותן בזו אחר זו באופן אקראי, הסיכוי שנוציא אותן בסדר הנכון היה 1:40,320.

כאמור, הסיכוי הולך וקטן ככל שגדל מספר החומצות האמיניות המרכיבות את החלבון. כדי ליצור חלבון שמורכב מ140 חומצות אמיניות, יש 135165 אפשרויות, ומספר זה גדול ממספר האטומים הקיימים בעולם! מתוך כל האפשרויות האלה, רק אחת מתאימה. לדברי אסימוב, השאלה אינה היכן מוצא הגוף את החלבון הנחוץ לו, אלא כיצד הוא שולט בתהליך היצירה של החלבון הזה.
