אחד התנאים להיווצרותם של חיים כתוצאה מאבולוציה כימית הוא הישרדותו של הרכב כימי מוגדר שנוצר במקרה, ושממנו נוצרו גם במקרה הרכבים הכרחיים נוספים. כשכל התנאים האלה מתמלאים, נוצרים חיים.

אבולוציה כימית

כיום אין כל חיים שנוצרים על ידי אבולוציה כימית, והמדענים תולים זאת בשתי סיבות: ראשית, גם אם יווצר ההרכב הכימי המסובך הנחוץ ליצירת חיים, רוב הסיכויים שהוא ישמש מאכל ליצורים שחיים על כדור הארץ. שנית, החמצן שבאטמוספרה יפגע בהרכב כימי זה. כפי שמתכת שאינה מוגנת מעלה חלודה כתוצאה ממגע עם חמצן, כך יתחמצן גם ההרכב הכימי הנחוץ ליצירת חיים. המגע עם חמצן גורם לפירוק החומרים הנחוצים להיווצרות חיים, והופך אותם לחסרי תועלת.

ביצה ותרנגולת

אם אכן החיים נוצרו באקראי, הרי שזה קרה כששני המכשולים האלה לא היו קיימים. ראשית, המדענים גורסים שכאשר נוצרו החיים לראשונה, לא היה קיים סוג אחר של חיים, כך שההרכבים הכימיים החיוניים לא היו חשופים לטרף.
שנית, לשיטתם, האבולוציה התרחשה לפני שהיה חמצן באטמוספרה. מסיבה זו טוענים מדענים, שוב ללא שמץ של ראיות, שבעבר הייתה האטמוספרה שונה. אבל כדי לטעון שהאטמוספרה הייתה בעבר נטולת חמצן יש להניח שהאבולוציה היא אמת. במלים אחרות, יש כאן מצב של ביצה ותרנגולת, ואי אפשר לקבוע מה קדם למה. נוכחות החמצן באוויר הייתה מונעת את תהליך האבולוציה, אך אין לנו כל מידע אודות עברה של האטמוספרה, ולכן אי אפשר לקבוע שהרכבה היה שונה.
