במקרים רבים המאמינים באלוהים מסתמכים על נבואות שהתגשמו כתוקף לאמונתם. זהו באמת אחד הטיעונים החזקים ביותר שניתן להביא. אך האם הן לא יותר מניחוש מוצלח?

הכתובים עצמם מגדירים את תפקיד הנביאים: "זכרו ראשונות מעולם, כי אנוכי אל ואין עוד אלוהים ואפס כמוני, מגיד מראשית אחרית ומקדם אשר לא נעשו" (ישעיה מ"ו 9-10).
"הראשונות מאז הגדתי ומפי יצאו, ואשמיעם פתאום, עשיתי ותבואנה... ואגיד לך מאז, בטרם תבוא השמעתיך, פן תאמר, 'עָצְבִי עָשָם ופִסְלִי וְנִסְכִי ציוָום" (ישעיה מ"ח 3-5).
הברית החדשה תיארה את בואו של ישוע כ"בשורה שאלוהים הבטיח מקדם בפי נביאיו, בכתבי הקודש" (האיגרת אל הרומים א' 2).
הנבואה מאשרת שאלוהים אכן קיים ושיש לו תוכניות עבור העולם שאנחנו חיים בו. נבואות על גורלם של אנשים, מקומות ואירועים נאמרו בפירוט רב מאות שנים לפני שהדברים התרחשו. אין כל אפשרות שמדובר ב"ניחוש מוצלח". דוגמה טובה לכך היא הנבואות שבישעיה מ"ד 28 ומ"ה 1 אודות כורש.
ישעיהו כתב בערך בשנת 700 לפנה"ס ונקב בשמו של כורש. הוא אמר שכורש יאפשר לעם לבנות מחדש את ירושלים ואת בית המקדש. כשהנבואה נכתבה ירושלים והמקדש עמדו עדיין על תילם. רק אחרי למעלה ממאה שנה, בשנת 586 לפנה"ס נכבשה ירושלים ונחרבה על ידי הבבלים. מאוחר יותר, כשהפרסים כבשו את בבל, הרשה כורש מלך פרס לבנות מחדש את העיר ואת המקדש. כל זה קרה כ160 שנה לאחר שישעיהו ניבא על כך. מדהים שישעיהו ניבא את חורבן העיר ואת בנייתה מחדש על פי היתר, שנתן מלך שנולד כ160 שנה מאוחר יותר.
זוהי איננה הדוגמה היחידה. יש מאות נבואות בכתובים. מגוחך לטעון שהתגשמותן הוא צירוף מקרים, מזל או נבואה המגשימה את עצמה. אלוהים סיפק ראיות למכביר לעצם קיומו ולעובדה שכתבי הקודש אכן נכתבו בהשראתו.
