שוב ושוב אנשים ניגשים אלי ושואלים, כמו תקליט שבור, ״אתה לא באמת קורא את התנ״ך והברית החדשה, נכון?״ אחרים אומרים, ״זה רק עוד ספר שעומד על המדף; אם אתה מחפש משהו שכדאי לקרוא, נסה את...״ ומציינים כמה מהספרים האהובים עליהם. יש אנשים שספר הבריתות מקשט את הספרייה שלהם. הם מספרים לי בגאווה איך הספר עומד לצד ״יצירות מופת״ אחרות כמו ״האודיסאה״ של הומרוס, ״רומיאו ויוליה״ של שייקספיר או ״גאווה ודיעות קדומות״ של ג׳יין אוסטין. ספר הבריתות שלהם עומד על המדף ומעלה אבק, וברור שהם אף פעם לא עיינו בו. ובכל זאת הם רואים בו יצירת מופת.
אחרים מעירים הערות משפילות, מרימים גבה לשמע הרעיון שמישהו לוקח את הכתובים ברצינות ומקדיש זמן כדי לקרוא בהם. העובדה שמישהו מחזיק בביתו עותק של ספר הבריתות נתפסת בעיני אנשים כאלה כסימן לבורות.
השאלות האלה הטרידו את מנוחתי לפני שהאמנתי שישוע הוא המשיח, כשניסיתי להפריך את הרעיון שהכתובים הם דברו של אלוהים למין האנושי. אבל בסופו של דבר הגעתי למסקנה שזהו רק אוסף של אמירות נדושות שיצאו מפיהם של בעלי דיעות קדומות, ושל אנשים משוחדים או בורים.
ייחודיות
מן הראוי שספר הבריתות יעמוד לבדו על המדף. זהו ספר ״יחודי״. נקודה. כל הניסיונות שלי לתאר את ספר הבריתות מסתכמים במילה אחת ־ ״יחודי״.
המילה ״יחודי״ פירושה אחד ויחיד; יחידי, משהו שונה מכל היתר; שאין דומה או שווה לו.
גם פרופסור מ׳ מונטיירו־וויליאמס, לשעבר פרופסור לסנסקריט (סינית עתיקה) באוניברסיטת בון שבגרמניה, חושב כך. אחרי 42 שנה שבהן הוא למד וחקר את ספרות המזרח הרחוק, הוא השווה בינה לבין התנ״ך והברית החדשה. ״שים את כל הספרים האלה בערימה אחת בצד שמאל של שולחן הכתיבה שלך; ואת הכתובים שים בצד ימין ־ לבד ־ עם רווח עצום בין שתי הערימות... כי תהום עמוקה, חד משמעית ונצחית מפרידה בין הכתובים לבין הספרות של דתות המזרח, שנחשבת לכאורה לקדושה... תהום שלא המדע ולא שום פילוסופיה דתית יכולים לגשר עליה״(314,315 ,Coiiett, AAB).
ספר הבריתות עומד לבדו כיחיד ומיוחד בין כל הספרים האחרים שעל מדף הספרים. הוא יחודי, ״שונה מכל היתר והייחוד שלו בא לידי ביטוי בין השאר בדרכים הבאות, ראה מאמרים:
